If you are in a New York car accident, call the police to investigate and file a report. The steps for obtaining a Bronx police accident report will depend on which law enforcement agency investigated your case. If you are given any paperwork after the accident, it may indicate which precinct you should contact.

New York Police Department accident reports are available for 30 days following the date of the accident. During this time you may request a copy of the report at the precinct office. You will need to complete a REQUEST FOR COPY OF ACCIDENT RECORD [PD301-165] form and provide a payment of $10.00 in the form of check or money order, payable to “City of New York, Police Department.”

After 30 days, your report will no longer be available at the precinct office, but you can request a copy from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. You will need to submit a NYS DMV form MV-198C and pay a $20.00 fee.

If your accident occurred outside of the Bronx, you can determine the appropriate agency by calling police stations or precinct offices nearest to the accident scene. If your accident occurred outside of a city or town, begin by calling the New York State Police or the county sheriff’s office. Be prepared to provide information about your accident, including the date and location of the accident, and the names of drivers and passengers involved in the crash.
